Small team, big impact: CEMML joins wildland firefighting in Alaska
In June of 2019, lightning ignited a wildfire on the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage, Alaska, threatening homes and infrastructure. A small group of CEMML wildland firefighter based at nearby Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson joined the response. With their specialized expertise, the JBER module has become a “force multiplier” for the Air Force in Alaska.

CEMML Participates in Rare December Prescribed Burn at Fort McCoy
CEMML wildland fire staff recently participated in a prescribed burn at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. While December is late for conducting prescribed burns, which are generally conducted in the spring and fall, the conditions were ideal. Prescribed burns help to improve wildlife habitat, control invasive plant species, restore native plant communities, and reduce wildfire potential.

CEMML collects biological data in support of Fort McCoy deer hunt
Every October, Wisconsin holds a nine-day gun deer hunt for people with disabilities. Since 2002, Fort McCoy has participated by holding a two-day hunt the first weekend of the statewide hunt. During the event CEMML staff provided assistance with registration and collected biological data to help with deer herd monitoring.

Helping to protect the threatened Mojave Desert Tortoise at Nellis Air Force Base
Every spring, during active tortoise season, a team of CEMML wildlife specialists conducts weekly surveys for signs of tortoise activity on Nellis Air Force Base and the Nevada Test and Training Range. The Air Force utilizes the survey data to minimize potential impacts to the species and plan for conservation opportunities such as habitat restoration.

CSU’s Warner College of Natural Resources recently appointed Reymundo Chapa as executive director of CEMML. Chapa served as interim executive director for a year leading up to the appointment and served as associate director of cultural resources at CEMML prior to that.

Beale Air Force Base is the new monarch butterfly hotspot with the help of CEMML biologist
For CEMML biologist Chadwick McCready, what started as an observation and a river bank restoration project, led to the discovery of 10 monarch breeding sites on Beale and the creation of a series of pollinator gardens to aid in the butterfly’s annual migration.

CEMML watershed management biologists conduct stream habitat survey at Fort McCoy
CEMML Watershed Management Biologists recently conducted a stream habitat survey at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. Data collected in the survey will be used to determine how a culvert should be placed, whether stream restoration is necessary, and how well fish are surviving in the habitat.
