CEMML employee recognized by CSU for outstanding service at Fort McCoy

Julie Steinhoff, a longtime CEMML employee has received one of Colorado State University’s 2022 Outstanding Achievement Awards for her service at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. She is one of six State Classified employees recognized.

CEMML Wildland Fire Personnel Aid in Aerial Fire-Suppression Training at Fort McCoy

CEMML personnel, as part of Fort McCoy’s prescribed burn team, joined with the Wisconsin National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 147th Aviation Regiment of Madison to complete prescribed-burns and conduct fire-suppression training on the installation’s South Post. Scott Sturkol of Fort McCoy’s Public Affairs Office shares the effort in an article for the La Crosse Tribune.

Project Recall: CEMML archaeologists discover signs of Native American history at Fort McCoy

In 2017, CEMML archaeologists undertook an excavation unlike any previously performed at Fort McCoy. The discovery of copper bracelet fragments, trade beads and flints likely reflect an early 1800-1830s era camp of Ho-Chunk tribal members in the time just before the first European settlers began to move into the area.

CEMML Participates in Rare December Prescribed Burn at Fort McCoy

CEMML wildland fire staff recently participated in a prescribed burn at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. While December is late for conducting prescribed burns, which are generally conducted in the spring and fall, the conditions were ideal. Prescribed burns help to improve wildlife habitat, control invasive plant species, restore native plant communities, and reduce wildfire potential.

CEMML collects biological data in support of Fort McCoy deer hunt

Every October, Wisconsin holds a nine-day gun deer hunt for people with disabilities. Since 2002, Fort McCoy has participated by holding a two-day hunt the first weekend of the statewide hunt. During the event CEMML staff provided assistance with registration and collected biological data to help with deer herd monitoring.

CEMML watershed management biologists conduct stream habitat survey at Fort McCoy

CEMML Watershed Management Biologists recently conducted a stream habitat survey at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. Data collected in the survey will be used to determine how a culvert should be placed, whether stream restoration is necessary, and how well fish are surviving in the habitat.

The Fort McCoy Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division Natural Resources Branch, of which CEMML staff play an important role, was recently awarded the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Military Conservation Partner Award, which recognizes significant natural resources management achievements by military installations.
