Position Summary
A temporary full-time appointment for a qualified Brown Treesnake (BTS) Technician position is available with CEMML and duty-stationed on Guam in compliance with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Mariana Islands Training and Testing Biological Opinion of 2015 and the Navy-funded Project Statement of Work that implement regional biosecurity measures to prevent introduction and promote control and management of invasive species.
The BTS Technician will support the CEMML-Guam invasive species program through various BTS management tasks. Responsibilities include:
- Service and maintain toxicant bait tubes for BTS control and interdiction on military lands.
- Prepare toxicant baits (acetaminophen) and maintain field equipment for use in BTS control.
- Conduct In-Cave night surveys for BTS control and interdiction.
- Collect morphometric data and conduct necropsy on captured BTS.
- Record and proof field data using smartphones/tablets and GPS devices.
- Operate gas/electric-powered and hand tools for vegetation control and trail maintenance.
There will likely be opportunities to assist with other ecological tasks, including but not limited to other invasive species control, biosecurity inspections, rapid response to new invasive species detections, or surveys for endangered species.
This is a full-time (40 hours/week) temporary appointment (not to exceed 12 months) and will be physically located in Guam.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Service and maintain a series of toxicant bait tubes, including replacing baits, checking traps for damage, replacing traps and/or parts
- Conduct night visual identification surveys for brown treesnakes as well as other reptiles and amphibians
- Conduct night surveys and snake captures in caves
- Use phone/tablets, survey applications and GPS/GNSS devices (Trimble, Arrow, Garmin) to collect data
- Vegetation control and trail maintenance to maintain access to trap sites
- Prepare mice baits for trap servicing
- Build and prep new bait tubes/traps for deployment
- Measure and record morphometric data on captured snakes
- Humanely euthanize snakes and conduct necropsies for stomach contents
- Document findings and prepare technical reports as required
- Submit and QAQC data, checking for accuracy and errors
- Monitor, clean and service equipment regularly to ensure all equipment is accounted for and in good working condition
- Other invasive species monitoring and management
- Biosecurity inspections of military cargo
- Invasive weed control and removal
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have a minimum of a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Minimum of 12 months of professional work experience in natural resources management, invasive species control or a related field. Experience needs to be well-documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or non-profit organization in the appropriate field.
- Training or experience conducting fieldwork and accurately recording, entering, and proofing data.
- Training or experience using field data collection applications on smartphones, tablets, and/or GPS units.
- Must be in good physical condition, and capable of walking several consecutive miles while carrying gear of up to 35 pounds in a hot tropical environment, often windy/rainy and on uneven terrain.
- Must be available to conduct in-cave night work.
- Ability to deploy from Guam to locations in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), sometimes on short notice, with the possibility of working overtime, during nights, weekends, and holidays whenever necessary.
- Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
- The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
- Must be willing to submit for NACI background check to obtain a DoD Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) card.
Preferred Qualifications
- BS Degree in Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources Management or a closely related field or more than two (2) years of professional work experience in natural resource management.
- Experience working in the Pacific region or other island ecosystems in the biological, natural resources, or agricultural fields.
- Experience capturing, handling and collecting morphometric data on snakes.
- Experience implementing control methods for invasive species, including chemical, biological and/or mechanical control techniques.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Guam CORE pesticide applicator’s license, or any state pesticide applicator’s license.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, as evidenced by prior experience documenting field activities.
- Familiar with DOD/Navy environmental and safety regulations.
