On April 19-20, 2016, CEMML hosted off-site and CSU-based Environmental GIS employees for two days of workshops and networking. The team of GIS professionals support spatial data standardization for the Air Force Civil Engineer Center – Environmental Directorate (AFCEC/CZ) headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.
Led by Associate Director, Gary Senseman, the annual event is an opportunity to learn from each other and solve problems. Day one was devoted to project-related activities and day two focused on professional development. Community speakers discussed topics including data handling, documentation, project management, communication, and IT-related issues.
Marielys Velez, a GIS Specialist in attendance said, “The attendees I spoke with said that they were getting a lot out of meeting others from different locations who are doing the same type of work as they are. It gave them an opportunity to collaborate ideas and share techniques on how to resolve the more difficult parts of their job.”
A total of thirty-six employees across the country attended, including team members from as far northwest as Alaska and southeast as Florida. The annual event is scheduled to continue in the future and CEMML is looking forward to hosting the event in spring 2017.
A CEMML team of wildlife experts at Edwards Air Force Base in California is trapping coyotes and bobcats and fitting them with GPS collars to better understand their movements and monitor changes in their population. The project also aims to educate base residents on the animals’ behavior and the important role these and other carnivores play in helping to maintain a healthy ecosystem.
